MEL BRADSHAW AT RIVERDALE LIBRARY

It was a full house last night at the Riverdale Public Library in Toronto’s east end. As part of the library’s 100th birthday celebrations, RendezVous Crime author Mel Bradshaw gave a historical talk illustrated with slides showing the neighbourhood in the old days. To evoke the library’s teen years, Bradshaw read from his Roaring Twenties whodunit Quarrel with the Foe. Lively discussion ensued, and fans had the author sign copies of all three of his crime novels.

RVC Writer's Retreat!

RVP writers, Vicki Delany, Barbara Fradkin, R.J. Harlick and Mary Jane Maffini were hatching murderous plots at a recent writers' retreat deep in the woods of West Quebec. They were joined by furry friends, Lily and Daisy, the two miniature dachsunds, Sterling, the standard poodle and Kieffer, the Nova Scotia duck tolling retriever. A great time was had by all. Plus they, the writers that is, came away with lots of wicked ideas for their next murder mysteries.

Brenda Chapman Honoured

The Ottawa Public Library Board has awarded the Ottawa Public Library Order of Friendship to the judges of the Awesome Authors Contest, including RVC's own Brenda Chapman. "This prestigious award recognizes outstanding volunteer contributions made to the Ottawa Public Library by individuals, groups and/or institutions." For a different sort of launch party for Gold Fever, the second in the Klondike Mystery series, Vicki Delany hosted a formal afternoon tea at The Tea Room, Marine Drive, Oakville Ontario. It was a great event, the food was lovely, served with a variety of teas. The early spring afternoon was exceptionally warm so people enjoyed sitting outside as well as inside the restaurant.

Cool Canadian Crime in Action

RVC authors, the publisher and the editor gathered on the evening of May 27 at the Mysteriously Yours Dinner Theatre for a banquet in honour of the nominees for the Arthur Ellis Awards of 2010. We were especially happy because two of the nominees were RVC authors, R.J. Harlick for Arctic Blue Death and C.B. Forrest for
The Weight of Stones.

Although neither of our nominees won, it was a fun evening where we celebrated the accomplishments of all crime writers in Canada. The evening ended with the presentation of the Derrick Murdoch Award for lifetime achievement to Peter Robinson, a two-time president of the CWC.

ARTHUR ELLIS SHORTLISTINGS!

On Thursday evening, April 22, there were Arthur Ellis shortlisting parties across the country, all well attended and convivial. We at RendezVous Crime attended the Toronto party at the Back Alley Grill in Kensington Market.

Maureen Jennings led a panel of award winners in a hilarious event which had the panellists (of which RVC author and two-time Arthur Ellis award winner Jon Redfern was a member) answer questions such as: When you won your first Arthur Ellis award, what were you wearing?

Today, RendezVous Crime is proud to congratulate two of our authors: R.J. Harlick has been shortlisted for Best Novel for "Arctic Blue Death" and C. B. Forrest for Best First Novel for "The Weight of Stones". Both are richly deserved nominations for two hardworking authors.

MALICE, MYSTERY, AND MURDER

Last night (April 21), RendezVous Crime author Mel Bradshaw was one of three writers featured in the "Malice, Mystery, and Murder" reading series at the historic Enoch Turner Schoolhouse in Corktown, Toronto. For Mel, this was a return to the scene of the crime: three years ago he gave a talk at the Turner on mid-19th century Canada, the milieu of his debut historical mystery Death in the Age of Steam. Yesterday he read passages set in The Royal Conservatory of Music (Victim Impact) and in a Cherry Street blind pig during Prohibition (Quarrel with the Foe). A paying audience of more than two dozen seemed to appreciate the irony of the latter. Enoch Turner founded the city's first free school in 1848 with the earnings of his brewery.

Arthur Ellis comes to Picton!

Arthur Ellis was the name adopted by Canada’s hangman (when we had one) and he’s coming to small town Ontario – but not professionally. Crime Writers of Canada adopted his name for their yearly crime writing awards. The shortlist for this year’s awards is being announced on Thursday, April 22nd – and one of the shortlist parties will be in Picton!

The festivities will include a panel discussion from the assembled authors (Weird & Wonderful Ways to Die), readings, a Q&A session, and of course, the eagerly-awaited announcement of the 2010 Arthur Ellis shortlist. If you love crime fiction, you have to be there!

Capital Crime Writers, in partnership with the Ottawa Public Library, is hosting a mystery writer and mystery reader event on Saturday, November 14, 2009, from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Main Branch of the Ottawa Public Library, 120 Metcalfe Street as part of its 20th anniversary celebrations. Mary Jane Maffini be on two panels and around throughout the day. She'll be moderating the panel Would I lie to You? From 10:00 to 10:30 with well known fibbers Brenda Chapman;Vicki Cameron;C.B. Over the weekend (July 17-19) Rendez-Vous Crime authors Mary Jane Maffini and Mel Bradshaw were featured at the Books by the Bay festival in Callander-North Bay, Ontario. Intermittent rain forced the relocation of events that were to have taken place on the shores of Lake Nipissing. Spirits were not dampened, however. Local artists used coloured sails and balloons to create a beach atmosphere in the Callander Community Centre, where Mary Jane and Mel read and talked to an appreciative audience Saturday afternoon. Gulliver's Quality Books & Toys ensured there were enough books for the crime writers to sign, and more than forty volunteers made the event run smoothly.

Yesterday (March 21), Indigo Stoney Creek hosted Mel Bradshaw from noon to 4 p.m. for a signing of his crime novels. Victim Impact, a modern story of law and disorder in the Golden Horseshoe, was the featured work. But Mel’s backlist, including the Ellis nominated historical mystery Death in the Age of Steam, sold just as well. At the end of March break, parents seemed ready for some adult entertainment. The combination of bright sun and cool temperatures made for excellent shopping weather, and as always customers’ questions and stories made time fly for the author. A bevy of RVP authors are getting a chance to escape the snows of winter. Lou Allin, Vicki Delany, R.J. Harlick and Mary Jane Maffini will be heading to Hawaii to attend the 2009 Left Coast Crime Conference on the Big Island, where they will be strutting their stuff under the palm trees of the Marriott Waikoloa Beach Resort. They might even attempt a hula dance or two. The conference runs from Mar. 7-12 and is packed with a dynamite program of author panels, Talk Story sessions, plays, movie screenings and of course book signings. And when they aren't talking up their books, they might even get a chance to sneak off to the beach or go on one of the many exciting sightseeing excursions.

Last June I had the immense thrill of winning the Best Novel award at the Arthur Ellis yearly banquet for my Victorian historical called TRUMPETS SOUND NO MORE. It had received good reviews--particularly one from Joan Barfoot on the webpage for The London Free Press. What a sensation it is to know your efforts have been recognized and that the research you did has impressed a critical reader like Barfoot, a prize-winning novelist in her own right. My research for TRUMPETS led me to England in the fall of 08 where I walked the streets in London, the same ones charted in my book as the locale for my detective's home, on Cursitor Street, and views of the street where the murder took place. An eery feeling grabbed hold of me as I walked with my camera, shooting doors and entrance ways that had figured so strongly in my plot. There is no doubt one can find remnants of the past so readily in London. So please, if you have read or are planning to read TRUMPETS as your next prize- winning detective novel, take a look at the pictures I have posted. One shows me on Cursitor Street standing in front of Detective Owen Endersby's London address. The other are shots taken on Doughty Street where the fictional murder took place and where, as well, there is one of the houses Charles Dickens lived in during the 1840s. The black bust is of the famous writer himself. The Ontario Library Association Superconference is on at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre, and yesterday (January 29), the Organization of Book Publishers of Ontario hosted two Napoleon & Co writers at their booth. OBPO administrator Marg Anne Morrison welcomed Mel Bradshaw at 2 p.m. Mel inscribed and gave out copies of his latest mystery Victim Impact (RendezVous Crime ) while supplies lasted, and was succeeded at 3 p.m. by Laurie Channer who did the same for her debut novel Godblog (Darkstar Fiction). Blowing snow didn't keep school and public librarians from turning out in force, and many stopped by for a chat even after the books were gone.

Sleuth of Baker Street, Toronto’s mystery bookstore, stayed open late Friday night (November 14) for the launch of Mel Bradshaw’s Victim Impact. Proprietors Marian Misters and J.D. Singh had book tables pushed back to accommodate a crowd that even so risked spilling out onto the street. The author of two historical mysteries, Mel was kept busy all evening signing and reading from his first contemporary crime novel, which he described as “a dark and twisted tale of revenge.” Napoleon & Company publisher Sylvia McConnell introduced the reading, and RendezVous Crime author Rick Blechta was among the numerous attendees.

Going Out with a Bang, an anthology of crime stories by the ladies Killing Circle, was launched in Ottawa in the rotunda of the National Library on Thursday November 20th. It was fun evening for everyone, and the boa wearing authors were well received. It was obvious that readers in the Nation's Capital really love their "Ladies".

Many, many copies of "Going Out with a Bang" were sold and signatures collected, making a fun evening for everyone.

Mel Bradshaw, the author of Death in the Age of Steam and Quarrel with the Foe, will be signing his latest crime novel, Victim Impact, at Prime Crime Mystery Bookstore, 891 Bank St., Ottawa, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, November 29.

Victim Impact brings Bradshaw's mystery novels firmly into the 21st century with a fictional study of the pursuit of justice, involving bikers and a criminologist, whose ideas on penalties for crime have been purely academic, right up to the point where the criminal act touches his life personally.

Ottawa will play host to Canada’s premier mystery conference Bloody Words 2009 from June 5-7, 2009. This national conference brings together authors, fans, librarians and those in the book industry from across Canada and the United States. Highlights of the conference will include panels of mystery authors, publishers and agents discussing books, the writing process and the publishing industry, while RCMP officers, private detectives, psychologists and forensic experts will deliver sessions on the intricacies of crime, criminals and detection. Take one of Ontario's most picturesque wineries, mix in several delightful wines and some delicious food, and add a dash (or two!) of mystery, and you have the recipe for a most unforgettable and unique literary evening: Crime in the Vines.

The brainchild of some enterprising folks in the Beamsville and Grimsby area in southern Ontario, it's the first of what is hoped to be an annual event supporting literacy in the Niagara region. Two of RendezVous Crime's authors, Barbara Fradkin and Rick Blechta, will be taking part in this event. You should be there, too!

On Thursday May 29th, RendezVous Crime launched the first title in a new historical mystery series by noted author Morley Torgov. Held at the Gladstone Hotel in Toronto, with 250 of the author's friends in attendance, amidst good food, good conversation, and good spirits, Murder in A-major, the first title in the series was officially celebrated. The author spoke about how his writing career began, and signed over 200 books!

The Ottawa Community Coalition for Literacy (a wonderful and effective organization) hosts this annual fundraising golf tournament. It is one of the tournaments founded by Peter Gzowski and is called the PGI Golf Tournament for Literacy. In 2008 they will be hosting the 20th tournament at the Loch March Golf & Country Club. There are 15 PGIs across the country and by the end of this golf season they had collectively raised $10 million over the years. In 2007 the Ottawa group netted $48,000 from their tournament. One of the unique features of the PGIs is the tournament poet laureate. At the dinner program, I'll read a poem I'll have written in honour of the day. Naturally, that means murder.
